We are on a break

Hi guys! So you may have noticed that I haven't been publishing new blog posts this week - this will unfortunately be a bit of a reoccurring theme for the next couple of weeks too I'm afraid! You might know that I am moving house on 7 August, and moving jobs too. I have had barely any spare time at all recently to spend on my blog, and I doubt I will be able to get anything up until after I've moved. I hope you will bear with me! I had intended to get a few posts typed up today but I've realised I must have already packed my camera USB connector so I can't get the photos on to my PC. It's a sign I should take a break I think!

I know compared to a lot of other blogs Bee's Knees has been somewhat inconsistent as I've had to take a few days/weeks off here and there, but I hope you will appreciate that I am not a full time blogger, I have an incredibly demanding full time job as a lawyer and sometimes there just isn't any time to create content for my blog. I hope you'll sit tight and I look forward to sharing my July favourites and much more with you soon!

Tuesday Tales #11 - Five Positives and Five Negatives of Long Distance Relationships

Hi everyone! Sorry for the lack of a post yesterday, life is crazy busy at the moment as I've now got less than two weeks left until I finish work! EEK. If you read the last in my Tuesday Tales series (Ten Tips for Long Distance Relationships - HERE) you'll know where my head is at currently... I am fast approaching the end of my long distance relationship and I am pondering my relationships and how I've managed to survive three LDRs!

This week I thought it would be a nice idea to share what I think are five of the positives and five of the negatives of being in a long distance relationship. I may not be the best judge of this as I've not been in a non-long distance relationship for nine years.. but here goes anyway!

(copyright - Rob Ryan - source)

FIVE POSITIVES

1) Not getting to see them every day keeps your relationship fresh and exciting, and you'll almost always have something to talk about.

2) You will (most likely) argue less than couples who see each other often, because you won't want to waste your previous time together!

3) There are so many different ways of keeping in touch these days it's actually quite fun being able to contact each other using Pair, Skype etc!

4) The time that you do spend together will be incredibly special and mean more.

5) You get to know them very well quite quickly - bear with me on this one as it may not be immediately obvious, but when you are in the early stages of a relationship you don't usually see that person all day every day for a few days in a row. But in most long distance relationships the only way you see each other is usually by staying at each other's places, so you learn a lot about them much quicker than if you are casually 'dating' or have a less intense relationship because you live closer to each other.

FIVE NEGATIVES

1) The cost of travel (even my same-country, merely 200 mile relationship costs upwards of £150 per month... ouch!)

2) Not feeling 'at home' anywhere - maybe it's just me but having to travel to see the person I love means I don't really put down roots anywhere, which makes me sad.

3) Seeing other couples and feeling raw, passionate envy. IT SUCKS.

4) Missing out on plans with your friends because you have to go to see your boyfriend/girlfriend for the weekend (it's kind of a no-brainer at the time but it makes it much trickier to form deep, lasting friendships when you can't commit to one out of every two weekends).

5) MISSING THEM.

Thank you to the lovely girls who commented on my last post about long distance relationships - have you been in one? What are the things you hate/love about it the most?

MUA Mosaic Bronzer - Sunkissed Glow

Hi everyone! So today's review is of a bronzer, which isn't a product I use very often but I thought it would be appropriate since we're now into summer and hopefully warmer days are upon us!

I picked up the MUA Mosaic Bronzer as part of a massive MUA haul at the end of last year when they had 50% off. I had never used a bronzer before and for only £2.50 before the discount, I thought it was worth a punt. The product comes in this plain black plastic packaging which doesn't look too bad considering the price.

I think the 'mosaic' style of the bronzer is really nice - it reminds me of high end products that I've seen featured on other blogs. As you can see, there is a variety of different shades and tones which you blend together with your brush before applying to your face. The shade I picked up is Sunkissed Glow, which I think is the lightest shade but there's also Natural Glow which looks a little darker.

Here's the bronzer blended onto my hand - as I would wear it on my face. I find this is a really good product for fair skinned girls like me who might want a little bit of colour and glow on their face but most bronzers are too dark. It's a nice product to use because it's so fine and easily blended into the skin to give a really natural look. I barely use any product when applying this so I'm sure this bronzer will last and last and last!

Overall I'm really happy with this, it's the perfect subtle bronzer for my pale skin, and for a mere £2.50 it's definitely a product I'd recommend picking up for the summer months. You can buy the MUA Mosaic Bronzer direct from MUA online HERE, or from Superdrug online HERE or in store.

Have you tried this bronzer before? What's your favourite bronzer to use in the summer months?

Soap and Glory Sexy Mother Pucker - Pink Apricot, Punch Bowl and Candy Gloss

Hi guys! So today is my last post about lip glosses, I promise! I've been really enjoying wearing these subtle, easy lip colours recently - in the summer lipstick just feels so high maintenance!

Soap and Glory Sexy Mother Pucker glosses were the first ones I tried, they're pretty amazing because they contain lip plumping ingredients that tingle on your lips and make your lips look fuller as if by magic! They're a great option for nights out in hot weather, especially when on holiday!

My Sexy Mother Pucker collection includes three different shades: Pink Apricot, Punch Bowl and Candy Gloss.

The packaging of the lip glosses is pretty standard and looks just like every other lip gloss, with the same sponge applicator. Nothing to write home about.

The colours are pretty though! Pink Apricot is my favourite summer colour because it adds a hint of orange gloss to the lips without being too in your face. Punch Bowl is cute pink that reminds me of the Poppy King lip gloss I reviewed a little while ago. The Candy Gloss shade is my least favourite because it's a shimmery, glittery pale pink that doesn't do much for my face, it feels a bit too young for me! But the other two are definitely winners.

The Soap and Glory Sexy Mother Pucker lip glosses retail for £9 each and you can get them from Boots instore or online HERE.

What do you think of the Sexy Mother Pucker lip glosses? Have you tried them before?

Railway Station Nail Polish Haul

Hi everyone! Today's post is about a trip I made to Boots whilst waiting for my train to Leeds in King's Cross. I actually went to the St Pancras branch as it's much bigger with plenty of make up to choose from, and only 5 minutes' walk from King's Cross. I had some time to kill so sauntered on down to the make up aisle...

...and walked out with four new polishes to add to my collection! I started out at the Barry M stall and noticed the new confetti top coats were out and on offer as part of the wider make up buy one get one half price promotion.

It took me a long time to decide between the colours but eventually settled on Liquorice (black and white) and Bubblegum (blue and white). I think the black and white will be really easy to wear and could be layered over different colours to create a nice look. Bubblegum is definitely a summer top coat that I can't wait to wear (on weekends, I doubt work will approve!)

Once I'd decided on the Liquorice top coat, I realised I didn't have a black polish with me and I really really wanted to try it out that weekend! So off I trotted to the Seventeen stand where I picked up a black polish and this pretty glitter/shimmer polish Navy Glint. I haven't tried polishes from Seventeen before so I'm intrigued to see what they'll be like!

You can get the Barry M Confetti top coats for £3.99, and the Seventeen Quicker Slicker Colours are £2.99 from Superdrug or Boots.

Fabulous Nails #48 - Models Own Apple Pie

Hi guys! For my nails, I love bold, bright colours and pretty pastels in equal measure in the warmer months, and this is one of my favourites!

This is Models Own Apple Pie - one of their scented pastel polishes that beauty bloggers have been going crazy for! I am quite partial to a cute minty green nail, and I know I'm not the only one. Apple Pie is just spot on, subtle but pretty and adds a splash of colour to even the dullest work outfits!

The formula of these polishes is very good but I do aim for three coats because sometimes it can dry a little streaky - the extra coat gets rid of any streaks. The brush is really easy to work with and better than a lot of other drugstore brands I use on a regular basis. AND of course this polish smells like apples! The scent lingers for 2-3 days after application and it's not very strong but it's a nice smell.

You can pick up Models Own Apple Pie for £5 from Boots or Models Own online HERE and HERE or in store.

The Escentual Micellar Water Blind Trial

Hi everyone! So you may have heard already about the Micellar Water Blind Trial which Escentual ran a little while ago. I was lucky enough to be one of the bloggers chosen to take part, and now that the results are out (read them HERE) I thought it would be a good idea to share what I thought of each of the products!

Escentual sent me 7 sample products to try over the course of 14 days - each one in an unmarked glass bottle. I was so excited when I received the samples, I couldn't wait to give them a go! Here's what I thought of each one...

Sample A - DIOR Instant Cleansing Water
The first impression I had of this product was the strong smell - it really smelled like it was full of chemicals, kind of a similar scent to sun cream actually. I didn't think this worked very well at removing my make up, which is the main reason I use micellar water before cleansing. It felt quite harsh on my skin and left my neck extremely dry. Afterward my skin felt normal and there was no leftover residue.

Sample B - Nuxe Micellar Cleansing Water with Rose Petals
When the results came out and this was the Nuxe Cleansing Water it didn't surprise me. I found this product to be very heavily fragranced and really floral - which I didn't like because my skin is quite sensitive. However this product was incredibly effective at removing make up and it just lifted off my skin when I swept it over my face with a cotton pad. My skin tingled after using this, and it didn't leave a residue but instead my skin felt very soft.

Sample C - Caudalie Make-Up Remover Cleansing Water
Sample C was a really soft, gentle and sensitive product which smelt really lovely and citrus-y to begin with but after use it left a strange afterscent. It was quite tricky removing make up with this product and I did have to use several cotton pads to get it all off, plus it left my skin feeling quite tacky.

Sample D - Avene Micellar Lotion - Cleanser and Make-up Remover
The Avene Micellar Lotion is one I'd been intending to try even before the blind trial started, so when the results came out and I discovered it was one of the samples I was pretty happy! This product smelt the best of them all, very soothing and like aromatherapy oils. It is also quite thick and nowhere near as watery as some of the other products. So far so good, but unfortunately I found this a really difficult make up remover as the product doesn't wipe off the skin very easily, probably because it's so thick.

Sample E - La Roche-Posay Physiological Micellar Solution
This was one of the best products for my sensitive skin as I didn't suffer any tingling or dryness after use. It was very lightly fragranced but nothing too strong and oppressive. This product was very effective at removing make up and afterwards my skin felt soft, fresh with no tacky residue. My second favourite of them all!

Sample F - Bioderma Sensibio H2O - Micelle Solution
As a keen reader of beauty blogs, I have been intrigued by Bioderma for a very long time! When I used Sample F I thought it was a nice gentle water which was unscented and skin to my sensitive skin. But at the same time it was very good at getting my make up off with little effort, and left no residue. My only real complaint is that it left my skin feeling clarified rather than soft, so I thought it might be a bit too harsh for every day use.

Sample G - Vichy Purete Thermale Calming Cleansing Micellar Solution
Now onto my last and favourite of the seven! The Vichy Micellar Solution was mostly unscented save for a very slight chemical-y smell, but I didn't mind too much. It was the most sensitive on my skin, but amazingly also the most effective at getting rid of my make up! My skin was beautiful, glowing and soft after use. Definitely my favourite, I will be purchasing a full size soon to try it out over a longer amount of time!

So my top three were:

1) Vichy Purete Thermale Calming Cleansing Micellar Solution - a soft, gentle but incredibly effective make up remover

2) La Roche-Posay Physiological Micellar Solution - a close runner up but a tiny bit more fragranced than the Vichy one, and marginally less effective

3) Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution - a smidge too harsh for me to use on my skin every day, but otherwise a definite all-rounder

For more information on each of the micellar waters featured in the blind trial, check out Escentual's edit HERE - can you spot my comment in one of the reviews? There are also a few offers on at Escentual so you might want to pick up one of the products and save yourself a few pennies!

Have you tried any of these micellar waters before? What did you think of them?

Tuesday Tales #10 - Ten Tips for Long Distance Relationships

Hi everyone, and welcome to this week's installment of Tuesday Tales. The theme this week is long distance relationships - you may or may not know that I am currently in a long distance relationship but this is soon about to change as I am finally moving in with my boyfriend in August! We have been long distance (London > Leeds) for the duration of our relationship, which is over two years, but even before that I have been long distance in other relationships. When you add the time together I've spent almost SIX YEARS of my life in long distance relationships! Which I hope means I know a thing or two about how to get through one - so here are my top ten tips!

1. Make sure you are both in the relationship for the long term
This seems like an obvious one, but it's really important. Generally you can't do a casual relationship long distance, and you have to commit to each other long term for it to work. Most people don't get into long distance relationships indefinitely and this usually means there's an end date in the distant or near future that you plan to be together, i.e. you're in it for the long haul. Now, I know from experience that one person might be completely committed to that but sometimes the other person isn't, and that is pretty much the end of your relationship. If you don't make sure you're both on the same page, equally committed to each other and moving towards the same goal, you may as well call it a day now before someone gets hurt.

2. Have a set number of times that you see each other per month or year
Now this kind of depends on how big the distance is between you, but in my long distance relationships we always had a rule to stick to which dictated how often we should aim to see each other. Obviously it's only to aim for and if Uni exams or other parts of your life get in the way that's okay, but I always tried to see my boyfriend at least once a fortnight. Having the certainty that it would only ever be two weeks between visits really helped me get through many a sad, emotional night!

3. Make plans together
This kind of ties in with number 2, but when you do see each other, make it really special! If you have a plan to go out for the day to somewhere you've both always wanted to go, you will make a magical memory and really enjoy yourselves. Having these memories is a good weapon to fight the days when you're despairing at your relationship and want to throw in the towel. It can be tempting to spend all the time you're together in bed, but if you get out and see the world you'll feel much better for it!

4. Make plans separately
Perhaps a contradiction from number 3, but it's ridiculously important to make sure you have an active life and plenty going on outside of your relationship. Your other half won't be around very much at all, so if they are all you have that makes you happy then you're not going to be happy. The best way to keep yourself going through a long distance relationship is to spend time with friends doing fun things that distract you. This is also the healthiest way to be in any relationship, so it's good to start out as you mean to go on.

5. Use Snapchat, Pair, Skype, Whatsapp, etc
Being in a long distance relationship these days must be so much easier than in the times before the internet and amazing phone apps that let you send photos, videos and messages to anyone anywhere in the world at the touch of a button. Skype is my personal favourite and I have relied on it heavily in the two years I've been with Neil. Sometimes there's nothing you want more than just to see them, and with Skype you can do just that, and it's free! Make use of all the technology that's around, it will make you feel more connected.

6. Don't compare your relationship to other couples
This might be the most difficult tip - as human beings it is in our nature to compare ourselves to others even if it makes us feel bad. If you're in a long distance relationship and the people you know are not, then for the love of God please don't compare yourself to them! You will only make yourself upset and feel alone. Every couple is different and you can never know the complexities of someone else's relationship simply from looking in as an outsider. Yes, they have the person they love close by and they could never imagine how lonely and sad you feel some nights, but remember that you will be with your other half and it will be worth the wait!

7. Make the effort to meet each other's friends and families
When you're in a long distance relationship it can feel like you exist in a bubble, away from the rest of the world. In a way you do exist in an alternate universe, at least for those few days a month you're with the one you love. But you've got to remember that for your relationship to work in the long term you have to both be integrated into each other's lives, and this means tearing yourselves away from each other to go out and meet friends and families. If you last the distance and make it to be a 'real' couple, you'll see plenty of your loved one's friends so make sure they know who you are and like you!

8. Try not to argue over text / telephone
Now for this tip I am 100% guilty of not taking my own advice, but try try TRY not to row with your other half over text or on the phone. It's really tricky because if you're long distance chances are most of your arguments will happen when you're not together, but try and resist it, get some perspective and cool down before starting something that could end very badly indeed. It can be so easy for someone to overreact over the phone and it's much harder to calm down and rationalise things when you can't just cuddle and make up! So do your best to keep a cool head and count to ten before saying something you'll regret.

9. Get a railcard
A pretty self explanatory tip, but if you're in the UK and facing a relationship that will involve lots of train travel to see the one you love, you'd better find the cheapest way of travelling or you'll find yourself penniless! Railcards are great and save a fortune, you'll have made up the purchase price after your first journey!

10. If possible, decide on a review or end date for your long distance
This one depends on your individual circumstances and where you both are in your lives, but I have found that it really helps to motivate you and keep you going if you have a date picked when you will either review your long distance and decide if you can be closer together, or when you will (eek!) move in together. In my two longest relationships there was an end date and the closer it got the more excited I felt! Having something to aim for will give you something to wish and hope for. I will be able to verify this in a few weeks' time, but I imagine there's nothing better than reaching your end date - it must feel like such an achievement!

Have you been in a long distance relationship before? What are your top tips?

SAVE don't SPEND #20

Welcome to another installment of my spending diary. On weeks like this one (i.e. where I spend a small fortune) I wish I wasn't keeping a spending diary because it would be much easier to just forget it ever happened, but it's good to keep an eye on just how much over my budget I'm going (this week, double my budget...) so I can make sure I make it up in the future..

Monday
4.45 - lunch
£4.45 - total

Tuesday
12.00 - taxi
£12.00 - total

Wednesday
4.45 - lunch
4.72 - food shop
55 - train tickets and admission tickets to Windsor Castle (for the weekend)
£64.17 - total

Thursday
8.50 - Boots No7 splurge
10 - lunch
£18.50 - total

Friday
NOTHING
£0.00 - total

Saturday
11.50 - Asda
5.50 - Starbucks
29.76 - Boots splurge
£46.76 - total

Sunday
10.00 - Nandos
8.50 - vegan cupcakes
£18.50 - total

TOTAL: £164.38

EEK that's a lot of money! I knew this week was going to be an expensive one because I had my Mum staying over the weekend and we went to Windsor for the day on Saturday, which cost quite a lot in train tickets and paying to get into the castle. We had a lovely time though, and the weather was scorching! I'm trying to make the most of every weekend I have left in London before moving (on the 7th of August - so soon!)

Are you trying to save money? How is it going for you?
